How Do Dental Implants Work?

Dental implants are artificial roots made of titanium used to either replace a missing tooth or support the area around a bridge. Once the artificial root is implanted into your jawbone and allowed to heal, an artificial tooth is attached, giving the look and feel of a natural tooth.

This procedure is spread out over multiple appointments over the course of several months, as it takes time for your mouth to heal and accept the implant. Once your procedure is completed, it is important to keep the implant clean and get regular dental exams.

The Process Of Dental Implants

If you are interested in dental implants, it is important to have a dental exam before your procedure. Once completed, our team will work with you to develop a plan on how to proceed.

During the procedure, your gum will be opened to expose your jawbone. A hole will then be drilled into your bone for the implant to be placed. Placing the implant in the bone allows it to act similar to a natural tooth root.

Once the implant is placed, you now must wait for the jawbone to grow around the implant (which takes several months). After healing is completed, an abutment will then be placed. The abutment will need to sit for a couple of weeks before an artificial tooth can be attached.
