What to Expect From Your Appointment

Initial Discussion

At the top of every dental exam and cleaning, we will have a quick conversation with you regarding your current oral health and any new symptoms. If you are a new patient, we might go over your health history to determine any particular oral health risks you may face.

A dental exam is essential for detecting and diagnosing potential oral health issues.

During your dental exam, we’ll evaluate the health of your teeth, gums, tongue, cheek, and the roof of your mouth. For a better look at how your teeth align when you chew or talk, we may take detailed x-rays as well.

Dental cleanings are essential for managing your oral health and removing plaque and tartar that could affect your teeth, gums, breath, and more.

During the cleaning, our oral hygienist will:

  • Scale your teeth. Scaling helps remove plaque and tartar from the surface of your teeth and around the gumline.
  • Polish and floss your teeth. This process helps remove any stains or leftover food residue from your teeth.
  • Apply a fluoride treatment. Fluoride can help manage the risk of developing cavities.

After the exam, our dentist will be happy to provide you with any findings from the exam and any recommendations that could help improve your health. For example, if you have a cavity, we can schedule a filling appointment to help address that problem.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding your oral health, please feel free to let our team know at any point.

Manage Your Oral Health Throughout Life

One of the best ways to manage your oral health is to have routine check-up appointments and cleanings.

As you age, your oral health can change, allowing for issues like cavities, diseases, and infections to develop. These concerns can make chewing uncomfortable, change the colour of your teeth, or result in unhealthy teeth that need to be extracted. Routine exams can help detect these problems and provide you with the information you need to manage your oral health properly.

Find the help you need from a team you can trust.

Why Are Dental Exams Important?

Brushing and flossing regularly is great for managing your oral health, but even the best-kept teeth can use a professional’s help.

Over time, plaque that isn’t scraped away from brushing or flossing can harden into a substance known as tartar. This tartar bonds with your enamel, slowly weakening it and increasing your risk of developing cavities, gingivitis, and more. If you have a health condition such as diabetes, you may be more at risk of developing these issues.

We recommend having a dental exam and cleaning once every 6 months. To help you minimize the risk of dental problems, remember to:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day
  • Floss once a day
  • Reduce how much sugar you consume
  • Reduce the number of cigarettes you smoke
